In Thai, luk khrueng translates to half-child.
Hi there, I’m Sophie.
I’m a British-born, half Thai half Danish writer based in Amsterdam (I know, it’s a mouthful).
I’m a “luk khrueng,” which translates to “half-child” in Thai. It’s a word commonly used in Thailand to describe a person who has one Thai parent and one foreign parent (in my case, a Thai mother 🇹🇭 and a Danish father 🇩🇰).
I decided to start The Half-Child to share stories of people like me. Occasionally, I also use it as a place to reflect, ruminate, and vent about what it’s like belonging – and in many cases, not belonging – to two vastly different cultures.
Growing up with two different nationalities, ethnicities, and ultimately, identities, can be confusing, awkward, and frustrating – but it’s also magical. I hope you enjoy our stories. 💜
